(You're) The Hero

more or less to a tune by Geir Bjørhovde, who also suggested the chorus, but when he couldn't explain what it meant I took the liberty of changing it slightly. The first six lines, added at a later date, form an opening that has nothing to do with Geir's tune... (By the way, the bit about Perrin and Gold is an in-joke...)

  Playing you on TV
  seemed a splendid idea
at the start of my career
Now I'm trapped in a scam
  Noone knows who I am
  My identity's unclear...

As I step off the plane I'm immediately crowded by fans
They have seen you on TV, and now they want me to shake hands
But I don't know...
They call me a hero -
for I've always been playing that role
But you are the hero -
you, the brainchild of Perrin and Gold!

  You know it's not me
I just act like the man they expect me to be
  You're the hero!
  I know it is you
who should do all the things they're expecting me to
  You're the hero!

And my spouse they will ask what it's like to be part of your life
She will tell them the things they expect from a great hero's wife
But I don't know...
She calls me a hero -
'cause I'm powerful, handsome and tall
(But) if I was a hero -
then I wouldn't be married at all!

  You know it's not me
I just act like the man they expect me to be
  You're the hero!
  I know it is you
who should do all the things they're expecting me to
  You're the hero!
  You're the hero!

(interlude)

There's a wolf in my garden - I certainly wish he was tame!
But the manager says that a wild one is good for my fame
But I don't know...
He calls me a hero -
but he couldn't be wronger, of course!
You can't be a hero -
when you're frightened to death by a horse!

  You know it's not me
I just act like the man they expect me to be
  You're the hero!
  I know it is you
who should do all the things they're expecting me to
  You're the hero!
    You're the hero!
      You're... the... HERO!
